Army vs. Navy Uniform Matchup

The 118th Army-Navy Game is this Saturday and will once again close out the college football regular season. Army won last year, breaking Navy’s run of 14 straight wins in the rivalry. To celebrate one of the best rivalries in all of sports, both teams came out with specialty uniforms for the matchup. Lets work our way head to toe and see how each team will look on the field Saturday afternoon.

Army Black Knights

  • Helmet: The all-white football helmet is one of my favorite looks and looks even cleaner with the white facemask. The black specs on the helmet are hard to see but add a small but nice gritty touch. The logo on the front seems very out of place and I think the helmet would have been better off without it.
  • Jersey: The white and gold is simple yet effective. The 10th Mountain Division patch and the American Flag make some of the best sleeves you will see on a uniform. I’m also glad they were able to still find room for the traditional Army logo on the collar. My only dislike is the strikethrough on the numbers. We’ve seen this from Army before but I think going with a solid number would keep things simple and clean.
  • Overall: You can never go wrong with the all-white uniform and if we get some snow Saturday, the elements may give the overwhelming nod to the Black Knights. Army didn’t push the envelop too hard, the only knock being the helmet decal.

Navy Midshipmen

  • Helmet: Normally navy blue and gold, this year’s Navy uniforms were given a Blue Angels twist. The jets on the helmet may look a little cartoonish, but this is about as good as they could look with the jet streams running down the back. The yellow chrome facemask also looks great, but I’m curious to see how the helmet will look on the players who will not be wearing a yellow visor.
  • Jersey: I love the large numbers, but when they try adding the Navy script as well, it looks a little squished at the top of the jersey. Although Navy traditionally has their name on the front of the jersey, I think this would have been the perfect opportunity to break that tradition and go with the “N” in the top right of the jersey.
  • Overall: It’s hard to find any major complaints with this uniform. The simplicity stays on course with Army’s uniforms, but the bold switch to the Blue Angel colors is what wins this uniform matchup for me. This color rush matchup has a good chance to be better than any of the NFL’s Thursday Night selections, which makes America’s Game a can’t miss matchup this Saturday.
